Pronouncing the Vowels in Spanish
This screencast discusses how prounouncing the vowels more natively will make your Spanish flow much more naturally.
- Vowels are the heart of the alphabet.
- The length and sound of vowels strongly differentiate Spanish from English.
- Spanish vowels sounds are shorter and consist of a single sound.
- Spanish vowels are much less broad or open.
Like the English alphabet, the Spanish alphabet – el abecedario español – has 5 vowels and more than 20 consonants. Vowels are the letters that can be voiced or sung, and consonants are the letters that accompany the vowels, as the name “consonant” implies.
As noted in the screencast, vowels are the roadway of speech; consonants are the curb. Vowels are the electricity and consonants, the switches.
